Wanderung
easy
From the start, the trail leads between the pottery kiln (left) and the children's playground (right), first descending a few meters into the Eichbachtal valley and then up the Mühlberg hill. At the next crossroads, the path leads to the right along the former “Kuhweg” to the “Marterl”, a wayside cross of the Virgin Mary. Here we turn left uphill. A cozy seating area offers a place to pause and rest. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view over Aulhausen with the village church of St. Petronilla, the patron saint of travelers.
The route leads slightly uphill through the fields of the “Gaulskopf” towards the “Kammerforst”. It is part of one of the largest unfragmented forest areas in Germany and has recently attracted particular attention: A wolf has been detected here several times. At the edge of the forest, the route turns right. If you let your gaze wander over the fields from there, you will see the hunting lodge, the former country residence of Count von Ostein, opposite you on the heights of the Niederwald.
At the next crossroads, we turn right again and walk down towards Schafshof. This once belonged to the Cistercian convent of Marienhausen. First mentioned in 1352, the farm with its 500 sheep offered Aulhausers and foreigners a livelihood. Today, the ensemble serves as a “vacation home” for the Benedictine nuns of St. Hildegard Abbey.
The potter's circuit now heads directly towards the grounds of the St. Vincenzstift, a special educational facility for the care of people with disabilities and from difficult family backgrounds. The 800-year-old Marienkirche church stands at the end of the Rheingau monastery path. It has a special feature: its interior and windows were designed by artists with disabilities. The unusual works of art by these people give the church a special character and form the setting for services, prayer and singing.
Through the park-like grounds of Marienhausen, you reach the gate and the “main street” of Aulhausen. There, the potters' circuit turns right and leads past the old town hall, the Lindenplatz square and the parish church back to the starting point. Information boards along the way explain the history of some of the buildings.
