Viticulture in Rüdesheim am Rhein has a long history: wines were already being cultivated in the 3rd century AD. Around 1900, a crescent-shaped Roman vine pruning knife was found in an excavation pit near the Brömserburg castle. This means that the inhabitants were already harvesting wine in the 3rd century AD. Further evidence was found in Merovingian-Franconian graves on the Oberstraße, namely wine glasses as pious grave goods. And Emperor Charlemagne is said to have recommended planting the more noble Orleans vines here due to the favorable climate.
Did you know that German wine predicates such as “Cabinet” also originated in the region? Many other German wine predicates originated here and were only used for wines of special quality. Spätlese, Auslese and their higher-grade varieties Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese were also discovered in the Rheingau.
Riesling and Pinot Noir are not only popular local wines, but are also known far beyond the city limits. Numerous winegrowers are responsible for their taste and outstanding quality. They look forward to your visit.
