Assmannshausen on the Rhine is widely known as a red wine community. Pinot Noir has been growing here since 1507 and is considered one of the best red wines in Germany. However, the vineyards around Assmannshausen are no longer just a red wine zone, but also a herb garden. Surrounded by vines, more than thirty edible wild plants and medicinal herbs such as wild fennel, ground ivy and garlic rocket grow here.
Discover the Assmannshausen herb kitchen on a tour of our herb farms in a family atmosphere. Experience the delicacies that can be conjured up from our local wild herbs and talk to us about herbs and cuisine.
Culinary wild herb hikes and walks through the vineyards are offered regularly, and a wild herb trail leads along an eight-kilometre circular route through the Höllenberg and Frankenthal red wine vineyards.
Three family-run hotel-restaurants, Hotel Zwei Mohren, Gasthof Schuster and Berg's Alte Bauernschänke, work together as herb hosts, enriching their menus with creative herb ideas and offering a whole range of informative and exciting culinary events throughout the year. During the herb season, which can last from April to November here on the Rhine, there are weekly guided herb walks. The signposted Assmannshausen herb trail with its more than 20 information boards invites you to discover wild dost, St. John's wort and sheep's sheaf for yourself. While many of the plants on our doorstep are true natural treasures thanks to their healthy active ingredients, their culinary side often has to be discovered first. The culinary herb hikes, which they organize together with partners, are highlights in the tasty herb farmers' calendar. A four-course menu awaits guests between heaven and earth, in the midst of the most beautiful nature, served directly in the vineyards and close to the wild herbs.
