FEELING OF SECURITY
Enjoying Romance
In the heart of romance at home - a place to enjoy and experience, to discover and feel good. Everything is present that I expect from relaxed days, away from everyday life.
The Old Bauernschänke was built in 1408 and has been owned by the Berg family for over 50 years. Since then, it has been continuously renovated for the benefit of our guests and expanded into three buildings with Berg's Old Bauernschänke, Berg's Vis a Vis, and Berg's Auszeit "Wellness & Wine."
Our family has been in the gastronomy business for 100 years, making this industry our core focus.
HOW IT ALL STARTED...
From the Origin
The origin of the company Berg's Old Bauernschänke lies in today's part "Vis a Vis," which was once run by the vintner Konrad Berg from Hattenheim starting in 1918 under the name "Nassauer Hof" as a small hotel operation with 8 rooms.
In 1960, his son Fritz Berg and his wife Lore acquired the historic "Old Bauernschänke" across the street.
The middle and oldest part of the complex, built in 1408, used to be a towing station. Here, there were stables and a change station for the donkeys and horses that pulled the ships upstream through the narrow Rhine Valley.
The front gabled timber-framed part housed a forge. In front of it, as was usual in the countryside, was the manure pile.
The Transformation
In 1870, the Niederwald, which has always been a well-visited region for strolling, gained tourist significance with the construction of the Germania. At that time, the then-owner of the Old Bauernschänke made a visit to Vienna. He liked the tradition of the Heurigen: listening to music, dancing, and drinking wine.
Fritz Wittmann turned the former donkey stable into a place of "Rhenish Joy" long before the famous Rüdesheimer Drosselgasse earned its renown for this. Here, people danced, and many a barrel was emptied.
In 1885, the cog railway was built, bringing guests from the valley to the Niederwald. In the upper part of the estate (our current breakfast restaurant), the Hotel zur Zahnradbahn was established.
Up to today
To this day, we uphold the tradition of our own house wine. The small vineyard Konrad Berg & Son continues in the 3rd generation and now offers highly awarded wines.
In 2006, the operation expanded again to include the adjacent area "Berg's Auszeit," which offers our guests "Wellness & Wine" at a high level.
There would be much more to tell - visit us and experience tradition as well as family warmth.
